Earlier this year, shortly after the long-awaited Friends reunion aired, rumours began to emerge that David and Jen were dating in real life, after the actors admitted during the one-off episode that they both had crushes on each other during the sitcom’s early days.
Now, a couple of weeks after Digital Spy learned the rumours were exactly just that, Jennifer Aniston has called the chatter “bizarre”.
“That was bizarre,” she told Entertainment Tonight during a joint interview with Reese Witherspoon. “I could not believe that, actually. Like, really? That’s my brother.”
Jennifer can totally “understand” why fans bought into the rumours, however, conceding that any real-life romance between the two co-stars would be a bit of a fairytale for fans.
“But I understand it, though,” she added. “It just shows you how hopeful people are for fantasies, for dreams to come true.”
Opening up about the romance that never was, David Schwimmer told the Friends reunion earlier this year that he and Jennifer were “both crushing hard on each other”, but likened the situation to “two ships passing”.
“One of us was always in a relationship,” he explained. “So we never crossed that boundary, we both respected that.”
Aniston later clarified in a separate interview that nothing happened between them, telling The Howard Stern Show: “He’s lovely, David was great. We were in relationships, it was always never the right time. And it wouldn’t have worked.”
